director Jeff Wadlow
Wow. This is an awful movie.
The first Kick-Ass (2010) I quite liked. And while I knew that director Matthew Vaughn wasn’t directing the sequel, he was producing, and most of the key principals were back, and the Jim Carrey character looked intriguing (which is not something you’ll hear me say often).
But it’s terrible. Chloë Grace Moretz has intrigued me since the first film. She was terrific as Hit Girl, the then 12 year old, foul-mouthed side-kick to Big Daddy, a great role for Nicolas Cage. And she’s still intriguing here at 15.
But the material is crap. The coarse, violent comedy that somehow worked the first time through is completely flat here. Nothing works. None of the jokes, none of the action, none of the hyperbole. And the whole side story of Hit Girl having to get in with the mean girl clique at high school, it’s terrible.
This, I would say, is one of the worst films that I’ve seen in a while. It’s kind of loathsome. And it gets worse points for squandering Moretz.
