About me.

I started this Film Diary thing in 2002, really just to write down the types of things I end up talking about to friends when they ask me about what movies that I have seen recently. So, despite having been in a film studies program at one time, I don't think I ever refer to theory or criticism here. In fact, I end up sounding more often than not that a "reviewer", which is actually the last thing I intended when I started to write this.

What this is for me is what I call it: it's a diary. It details what I have seen and some of the thoughts I have had about the films. It's not a blog, though maybe it resembles one or is essentially one. Still, it's not.

I have the extreme privilege to live in San Francisco, and while it is not one the "top" film cities with copious amounts of film houses with unusual and classic fare, it is actually a pretty damn good place to be to see more interesting films. I am sure that whether or not I see really "interesting" films or not might be debatable, but that is the one true thing that I open up for my readers, which is my actual viewing history.

I prefer very much to see film in a theater and on film, but realistically, I have a budget and a family and do not get to the theater half as much as I like to. I don't know that I even watch as many films on DVD as I would like to, but that is where I see the bulk of the films I see. I rarely watch films on television or video, since they are either not letterboxed or are edited or filled with commercials or in any way compromised. I also only detail films that I watch all the way through to the end. Anyone reading this who has children can relate to the fact that they might have seen The Iron Giant eight million times but never all at once, knows essentially to what I am referring.

I do this, I guess, largely for myself, but do question how much of a waste of time this site is. So, if you have read this and read anything that interests, incites, or annoys you, feel free to write me.

Keep in mind, this isn't journalism, so I don't really check my facts too deeply. I can offer misinformation from time to time.
