Best Films of 2014

Best of 2014

2014 sucked for new movies.

If my “Best of 2014” list was comprised of only new movies I saw in the theater, it would only have one film on it: Doug Liman’s Edge of Tomorrow.  It doesn’t mean that I think that is the best movie of 2014 but it’s the only new movie that I saw that I put on my “Best of” list this year.  It’s a good sci-fi action film with the time loop twist and despite starring Tom Cruise, I really liked it.

If I created a “Top 10” of movies from 2014, I’d be cramming a bunch of films on the list that really weren’t that good.  There are movies that I want to see that I haven’t yet seen like Boyhood (2014) and Citizenfour (2014), but you can’t list what you haven’t seen.

As I note almost every year, my list is comprised of my favorites of all the movies that I saw this year, from 2014 to (in this case) to 1929’s A Cottage on Dartmoor.

Perhaps most notable, I would single out Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing (2012), which I saw in January, really a leftover from the prior year.  I think it’s one of the best movies of the last decade or longer.  Had I the opportunity, I would have watched his film The Look of Silence (2014), a follow up to The Act of Killing that is supposed to be every bit as amazing as the other.  It hasn’t been released in SF yet.

Additionally, pictured above is Elem Kimov’s Come and See (1985), which I just recently watched and was utterly amazed by.

I watched more movies this year than ever before.  An exhausting amount of movies.  More movies than I think I can fully absorb in a year, though I did manage to write about them, each and every one.  So, the list is longer than normal.

I recommend all of the films below for different, variant reasons.

Here’s to a better 2015.
